GANGAVARAM Port Limited (GPL), here, is planning to augment its handling capacity by adding four berths and associated facilities including additional railway sidings and open covered stockyard area. The Port plans to operate 9 deep draft mechanized berths by 2013 and expect to handle more than 40 million tonnes of cargo by 2015.

The port has been on a steady growth path since it commenced operations in August 2008. It has the unique distinction of being a Greenfield project which has been implemented on schedule. The port and its related facilities and cargo handling equipments meet the highest standards in terms of pollution prevention and safety. The port also has significant flexibility for future expansion to meet the international demands for trade. With five deep draft mechanized berths, the GPL has handled more than 28 million tonnes of cargo since its inception.

The technologically efficient and cost-effective logistic solution of GPL ensures significant cost advantage and saving to port users.

Due to large parcel sizes at deep draft berths and efficient operations, vessels waiting time is significantly reduced.

The port has achieved numerous operational milestones since the start of its operations. Recently, it achieved highest discharge rate for a panama vessel MV Welsucess by discharging 65,359 MT of non-coking coal cargo achieved on January 8, 2010 for vessel MV Prabhu Puni.

On environmental front, Gangaravaram management regularly conducts green drives by planting saplings and maintaining a clean and safe environment. Under its operational environmental management plan (OEMP), terrestrial and marine areas are protected.

The port also has the most modern and scientifically designed Mechanical Dust Suppression System (MDSS). Pollution control facilities are designed to recycle the wastes and minimize the fugitive dust.

The GPL has also taken all possible steps to provide employment to the people affected by the project. It has recruited 508 people as against promise 600.
